Instagram, SnapChat, Twitter are flooded with various images
of cutely painted dog paws. It is time you gave your Fido a pedicure. Here are
a few steps that will help you get started and tips on how to give your pet
that perfect pedicure.
Familiarize your pet with your touch
If you have always gotten professional help to get
your pooches nails’ trimmed and are doing it for the first time, it is
important that your pet is acquainted with your hold. Ask for your dog’s paw.
Let it give it to you willingly. Hold it firmly but do not force it. Release
after two minutes and give your dog a treat. Introduce the clippers on the
third day of this ritual.
Create a comfortable place for you and your dog
Both you and your pet need to be comfortable. Giving
your pet a pedicure is different from putting on dog clothes. It is necessary that you are relaxed and so is your
dog. So take out that rug that your dog loves and put your dog on it. It will
be better and more convenient if you sit on the floor as well. Put on some
music that is mutually appreciated by both of you and make sure there is proper
lighting.
Tools that will help
You will need to keep a few things handy before you
decide to give your dog a pedicure. A pair of nail clippers, styptic powder,
anti-bacterial ointment, pet-friendly nail polish and polish removing pads are
essential. It is as easy to buy nail polish for your dogs as it is to buy dog clothes. Buy a few all-time
favorite colors such pink, silver, peach, etc.
How to go about it
Take a paw at a time. Start with wiping off any debris
or dirt between your pet’s paw by wiping its paws with a warm, wet towel. Trim
the nails to the required length. Apply some anti-bacterial lotion and some
dog-friendly moisturizer if you happen to have some. Then take a nail paint
bottle and start painting one nail at a time. Let the paint dry before you let
go of the paw. Most nail paints take less than a minute to dry off. Start
another paw only after finishing the previous one and preferably with a two
minute interval. It is advisable to finish the hind legs first.
